as ～ as any-
「どれにも劣らず～」
She works as hard as anybody.
「彼女は誰にも劣らずよく働く」
as ～ as ever
「相変わらず～」
He was as sweet as ever.
「彼は相変わらず優しかった」
as ～ as ever lived
「今まで存在した誰にも劣らず～」
Osamu Tezuka as great a cartoonist as ever lived.
「手塚治虫は今まで存在した誰にも劣らない偉大な漫画家だ」
as good as～ ＝ no better than～
「～も同然」
She was as good as agreeing to the opinion.
She was no better than agreeing to the opinion.
「彼女はその意見に賛成したも同然だった」
主要な比較表現
all the 比較級 for B
「Bだからこそ一層～」
She loves him all the better for his kindness.
「彼は優しいから、彼女はより一層彼を愛している」
not so much A as B
＝more B than A ＝ less A than B
＝B rather than A ＝ rather B than A
「AよりむしろBだ」
I was not so much mad as sad.
「腹立たしいというより悲しかった」
否定文＋still / much less～
「～はなおさら(しない)」
He cannot speak Portuguese, still less write it.
「彼はポルトガル語が話せない。書くことはなおさら出来ない」
肯定文＋still / much more～
「～はなおさら(する)」 ※古い表現
He will help an enemy, still more a friend.
「彼は敵すら助けるだろう。味方ならなおさらだ」
no more ～ than B＋動詞
＝not ～ any more than B＋動詞
「Bがそうでないように(Aも)～でない」
I can no more swim than you can.
「あなたが出来ないように、私も泳げない」
※この表現では、後半のthanから後ろにある「B＋動詞」の部分に注意です。
英文の表面上は肯定の形ですが、実の意味は否定を表しています。
less ～ than B ＝ not so ～ as B
「Bほど～ではない」
The vice president less strict than the president.
「副会長は会長ほど厳しくない」
the (～比較級) of the two
「両者の中の一層～の方」
Mr. All Kyojin is the taller of the two (men).
「二人のうち、背が高いほうがオール巨人さん」
no more than～ ＝ only
「わずか～だけ(の)」
There were no more than two customers came to the shop today.
「今日お店に来たお客はわずか二人だけだった」
not more than ～ ＝ at most
「多くても～ほど(の)」
He has not more than three cars.
「彼が持っている車は多くても三台だ」
no less than ～
＝ no fewer than ～
＝ as many as ～
「～ほどもの(たくさんの)」
That couple has no less than six children.
「あの夫婦には子供が6人もいる」
not less than ～ ＝ at least
「少なくとも～ほど(の)」
He has been divorced not less than twice.
「彼には少なくとも二回の離婚歴がある」
be superior to B
「Bよりも優れている」
This new car is superior to the old one.
「この新しい車は古いのより優れている」
be inferior to B
「Bよりも劣っている」
He is inferior to her in Math.
「彼は数学では彼女より劣っている」
(～years) senior to B
「Bより～歳年上」
My brother is two years senior to me.
「兄は私より2歳年上です」
(～years) junior to B
「Bより～歳年下」
Her sister is three years junior to her.
「彼女の妹は彼女より三歳年下です」
the ＋… 比較級, the ＋～比較級
「…すればするほど一層～だ」
The harder you work, the more you get high praise from people.
「一生懸命に働くほど、人々から高い評価を得る」
prefer A to B ＝ like A better than B
「BよりAを好む」
I prefer Bianca to Flora.
「フローラよりビアンカが好き」
know better than to (～動詞原形)
「～するほどバカじゃない」
She knows better than to believe in urban legend.
「彼女は都市伝説を信じるほどバカじゃない」
have / get the better / the best of B
「Bに勝つ」
I got the better of my cowardice.
「私は自分の臆病心を抑えつけた」
not so much as (～動詞原形)
「～さえしない」
The old lady couldn’t so much as remember her own name.
「その老婦人は自分の名前さえ思い出せなかった」
without so much as ～ ing
「～さえしないで」
She left without so much as saying “Good bye.”
「彼女はさよならも言わずに去っていった」
none the (～比較級) for B
「Bだからといって少しも～ではない」
He was none the happier for his wealthy.
「彼は金持ちだからといって少しも幸福ではなかった」
A as well as B
「BはもちろんAも」
He was kind as well as clever.
「彼は賢いのはもちろん、親切でもあった」
would rather (～動詞原形) than (…動詞原形)
＝ would sooner (～動詞原形) than (…動詞原形)
＝ would as soon (～動詞原形) as (…動詞原形)
「…するよりむしろ～したい」
I would rather stay home than go out.
「外に出かけるよりむしろ家にいたい」
A is to B what C is to D
＝ A is to B just as C is to D
Bに対するAは、Dに対するCと同じだ」
He is to her what the sun is to plant.
「彼女にとって彼は、植物にとっての太陽と同じだ」
【番外編】
ある物と他の物を比較するのではなく、同一物の範囲内で比較する場合は、最上級の形容詞でもtheはつけません。
Lake Biwa is deepest at this point.
「琵琶湖はこの地点が一番深い」
倍数表現
half as ～ as B
「Bの半分ほど～」
He earns half as much money as his brother.
「彼はお兄さんの半分ほどのお金を稼いでいる」
twice as ～ as B
「Bの2倍ほど～」
I spent twice as much money as my husband.
「私は夫の2倍ほど多くお金を使っている」
three times as ～ as B
「Bの3倍ほど～」
Red Zac can moves three times as fast as ordinary Zac.
「赤いザクは普通のザクの3倍ほど速く動ける」
ガンダムネタです。
主人公アムロの敵シャアが乗る赤ザクは普通のザクより3倍速く動けます。
昔ノック部分が赤ザクになっているシャーペンを使っていたアメリカ人に“You can write the letter three times faster than usual.”(普通の3倍速く字が書けるね)と言ったら喜ばれました。
ガンダム好きの外人さんには、ぜひ赤ザクネタと絡めてこの倍数表現使ってみてください(´▽｀*)
half / twice / three times ＋ the size / the number / the amount ＋of B
「Bの(半分の大きさ / 2倍の数 / 3倍の金額・量)」
He has five times the number of my DVDs.
「彼は私の5倍ほどの数のDVDを持っている」
